The following photographs were first
published in the March 1929 edition of Motor Ship at which time the
Rangitiki was on her
maiden Voyage to Wellington. The article was presumably written
either before or during (perhaps both) the ship's sea trials prior to
hand-over to the New Zealand Shipping Co. Indeed, the lead in
picture to the article is the same picture first on the Postcards page of
this website, which itself was taken during sea trials.
The article concerned itself with the building of the Rangitiki
but the majority of it was devoted to the two five-cylinder Brown-built
Sulzer engines. It's quite possible that a junior engineer or
apprentice may remember the engine room in this configuration extant until
1947/48 when these engines were swapped out for Doxfords. |
